The Death of Hippie March was commemorated back in October, 1967, at the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, San Francisco.

I guess, most of us here are 41 years late. :rainbow:

Rampant consumerism.. now that one is understated! lol... I havent lived in California long, but the gigantic shopping complex's and 2 story McDonalds are among the first things I noticed! Not to mention the mountains of junk mail I get trying to sell me something. They are also pretty superficial here I guess... I think "OK" magazine must have some sort of new-comer alarm, because they have been sending me that god aweful shit rag since I moved here!
The cost of living here is pretty high as well.. Im used to hawaii prices, but, still, for the mainland - this place has some outrageous rent!
Oh and one more thing... I havent had telemarketers - specifically the cops or the fire department calling me asking for money this much in my life - I am grateful for the cops and the fire department doing their jobs... I do believe that they should be supported, (I will even donate 10 bux now and again) however, I pay my taxes.. I have done my due dilligence. Its up to them to better their work situation!! - if they were calling to invite me to march with them to the "Govenators" address, and picket/protest or whatever in demanding better pay, or better gear... I might consider it, however until then... they need to leave me the hell alone!!

Mad amounts of plastic surgery and an unrealistic image to live up to, traffic, pressure to have the newest bag, clothes etc. people maitaining these things by living off their credit cards and credit being percieved as cash.
Unreal home prices...my mom lives in a modest neighborhood in a 3 bedroom home, 1/4-1/2 acre in North County San Diego and her home is worth about 750,000. I can't see us affording a home like that anytime soon.

Although, California, particularly in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, was one of the places where the hippie scene originated in the 60's as an outgrowth of the Beat Generation of the 50's, California today is nowhere near what it was from back in the 60's.

Although, relics from that era can still be found here and there, California sadly, today, is no longer that same California, that was immortalized by the Mama's and the Papas, in California Dreaming, or even that place called San Francisco, in "Flowers in Her Hair" sang about by Barry McGuire.

Let's see...I currently live in SoCal....so...where do I even begin?

The smog, the pollution in general, there are just too many people here, too expensive, people are materialistic, people do not look you in the eye when they talk to you or hold doors open for you, or even use pleases and thank-yous. I also think people in California think they are BETTER than you BECAUSE they live in California...though this thread makes me feel better about feelng the way I do.

Northern California is a bit different, but at least here in SoCal it is the above things.

U guys listed the same exact things that are happening in every city in this country. Don't be mad and complain, embrace the fact that we have these new buildings, new jobs, etc...I can't say anything about the materialism with people and insecurities. Fake titties and lips on my chick is not what I want but if that's what they wanna do, so be it...we have the technology, what makes you think that 100 years ago people wouldn't be doing the same thing if the discoveries and technology was there?

California is just expensive, alot of people addicted to Meth and fucking up their lives, also we have some of the craziest drivers and yeah...

I think we used to be the laidback state, but now everyone is trying to live the fastlane because they are watching these damn idiot box too much.

I'm not meaning to cramp any of your styles, but you're all being a bit silly about this. While yes, younger kids tend to idealize the place, most Californians I've known really don't know how good they have it. I've lived in both California and other 'shithole' states (currently Oklahoma, don't get me started), and I can tell you that of the forty or so I've been to, and the six I've lived in, California has the highest quality of living by far, and really does have some of the nicer, if sometimes superficial (but who are any of you to judge how others choose to live their lives?), people I've ever met.

Honestly, come live in the Bible Belt sometime, you'll gain a new appreciation for California.

And, first and foremost, that's what LA is all about.

amen! i just moved from virginia to norcal... it's a bit pricey but i don't require much in the way of cost of my living so it suits me just fine. there's so much more of an open mind out here. it was stifling back where I came from

I lived in Santa Cruz for a couple of years before I left because people in that area of California suck and it is so expensive…
Not everyone but the majority of the people are just rat race that care about no one but themselves.
You’ll be just driving down the road and someone will just fly by you flip you off and threaten you for no reason, maybe you made them 30 seconds late for their t.v, show.

So much meth.. tweaked out scumbags everywhere..

It is so expensive to live, last time I was visiting the economy was shit and they were renting one-bedroom apartments for $900. Then you look at the job section and the jobs were $8 -$10 an hour.
How the hell can you rent a small apartment for $900 making $10 an hour?.. Impossible.

I love the country and the climate so nice… And the ocean is a peace of my heart..I miss it!!

But the people are just rat race and the cost of living is insane.

My reasons why California is not that cool is... its in the USA, all of the complaints I hear sound like the purposes America has grown to the size it has, consumerism, racing for the "America Dream" and any metropolitan city is going to have traffic, thats where all the jobs are at. I totally understand the complaints but fuck America if you ask me.

your all talkin bout the citys.. shit like that happens in most metropolitan areas granted cali still sucks i.e. the biggest firework is pretty much a sparkler and its damn near impossible to buy a gun...

but for the most part everyone here describes SoCal get up above sac and you dont have to wry bout smog, or hardly any of that other crap.. course theres no major cities up here either... still high cost of livin tho

with all it's false, the US is still the best, most charitible, and closest to free country on the planet.

dirtbag redneck meth head trailer parks, gang violence, living next door to people for twenty years and never so much as getting a wave hello from them. EVERYTHING is far away enough that you have to drive to it. you can't go to the beach broke, because parking is $5 at least. nothing lasts, at all, ever. the lifestyle will suck the soul out of anyone. people are tense and cranky all the time, because they're busting their asses to afford their overpriced homes. and let's not forget, the sheer number of christian groups handing out leaflets and yelling at you when you don't want them. and that's coastal. at least the bible belters assume you're already "saved."

mid eastern border of cali around lake tahoe i cannot say i have any complaints about. ive never lived there so i probabbly cannot say anything as far as taxes and long term expenses go, but the people there are great. everybody i sooo nice, it made me so comfortable that nobody was superficial or snobby up there. i'm guessing the housing prices are a bit expensive in that area though, but maybe not. The climate was beautiful, and i wouldnt mind a harsh winter. I was there during the summer though.

either way, better than the shitty south florida. where its a sauna every day in the summer when you walk outside, it truely is unbearable. it honestly makes you miserable just walking outside of your house because no matter how many layers of clothes you remove or wear, you still cant figure out if you are sweating or just wet from the air. its discusting. there is maybe 2 weeks out of the year that the florida weather is likeable. and that is when it is cool (60s on the COLDEST day, but averages to about 70 for that week until you get to the afternoon where it goes back up to 80). Fuck humidity. if you want to live in florida, move to the middle of the state.

I live in cali dipshit. Born and fucking raised.

On a side note, the reason why other countries aren't nearly as free and can't strive is because of the U.S. involvement in civil matters and policy.

I think this is kind of lame because I would say beyond CA being expensive most of these reasons can be attributed to pretty much any city. Sure you'll find fake people here but you'll find them pretty much anywhere. I've lived in LA for 5 years and all the friends I've met are pretty awesome and will be life long friends. The weather is amazing, the natural beauty is great. I can drive 45 minutes from my door and I can be in the mountains. That's pretty special. Sure there are bad things but for me the good definitely outweighs the bad. :)
