I'd like it too, but I'm only in my 40's...would I qualify?

I guess that at 60 I am an old hippie or as I like to call it - latter day hippie. Was in NYC in the late 60's, lots of protests and jailed a few times. Was at Columbia U. in May 68 - an outside agitator(Yippie!).
So am I old enough? or too old? Haven't really changed the way I dress or act.

I think 50 or so would probably be the cutoff , no? So ppl born in 1957 or earlier would qualify as an old hippie.

i feel so left out lol, theres no young hippies group, theres no hippies in general group, and im too young to join the old hippies lol (obviously)

but hippy.com is different, since its not a member group on hipforums...

i agree with dsotm

Haha, Tom, that was great, hippie\hippy, I had no idea!.....:)

Ok, but why does that mean no hippie group, or a hippie group under a varied name, like the hippie lounge or something.

The biggest thing I noticed was the spelling. See http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~brians/errors/hippie.html

But, whatever works. Just thought I'd askUh, that dude doesn't know what he's talking about. Did he write a book like this on the subject?
http://www.hipplanet.com/books/atoz/atoz.htm

Hippy has been an acceptable way of spelling it since at least 1966. Do your research, don't accept BS like that (one paragraph, no citations). Sorry you can't rewrite history (not as long as I'm alive!)

And yes, if you can come up with another name and IDEA for a group, it might be acceptable.

BTW, MOST of the groups already formed on this site ARE hippy groups. There's no need for redundancy.

Finally this thread is about an OLD Hippies group. You are all OFF-TOPIC here.

the original coining of the word wasn't hippy or hippie but hipster........both spelling versions are acceptable.........i'm sure i have read as many articles and books on the subject as the esteemed professor has and both spellings have been in use since the original coining of the word ......the oxford dictionary lists both spelling .....sorry to say but the professor loses on that one .......can't take everything written on the internet at face value .............and im french ......sheesh........way to go skip

Tuatara is correct. Sorry but neither Webster, nor the Professor invented the word, so they are in NO position to tell others how to spell it.

In fact, as Tuatara and I pointed out BOTH spellings have been in existence as long as the word.

If you want MORE info on this subject I can provide it, but it's PRETTY boring and pointless to argue over a word.

Words are spelled in dictionaries (which both you and the professor choose to ignore), the way they are spelled in common use. I could show you dozens of examples from the 1960s of the word HIPPY being used.

Therefore there IS no right or wrong way to spell a word. Dictionaries spell them accordingly AFTER their use is noted in society.

In fact in Great Britain, which is no stranger to the HIPPY movement, the preferred spelling is indeed hippy. Go tell the British they don't know how to spell English words, and see the response you get...

Now that you've continued to take us off-topic, perhaps we can get back on it.

BTW, here's a quick image of one really strange use of the word, in a candy product for children from the 1960s!!!

there was a young hippies group. but skip got mad because they kept giving titles to their threads like "hey!" and "guess what?". http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=211184
a lot of people got banned and the ones that weren't were getting angry, so skip renamed it "the whiners" and moved it to the mind trip forums:

http://hipforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27No that wasn't a group, but a forum. There is a difference.

Here's more hippy images as I find them...

This one is from a 1974 Pakistani movie soundtrack...

Guess you've never heard of the Hippy Gourmet TV show either...

http://hippygourmet.blip.tv/

Shows it's still being spelled Hippy in modern usage.

Here's a British poet reciting his poem, The Hippy.

Here's another contemporary Brit with a comic called Hippy Steve

I like The General Hippie Idea as well. If their's going to be an Old Hippie group their should definitely be a Hippie group

What this forum truly needs is a place where the old timers can meet in peace, without interruption from teenagers and young adults.

The young have many places to call their own here.

Can't the old hippies have a place to call their own also?

I believe they have earned that privilege.

why cant Skip just make 2 groups. one for the old, one for the new. everybody can relate easier. everybody'd be happy.

I am completely OK with an old forum. I think its a fantastic idea, but I think young hippies want the same. why should one get theirs when the other doesn't. Not that I find old hippies "interupt". it would just be nice

See this is exactly the problem. Here's young hippies "interrupting" a thread about Old Hippies. Proves Old Hippies need their own group, and proves young hippies aren't ready for theirs. Read the forum guidelines about Off-Topic postings.
