tell me about your area. Im thinking of making Ga my home...Ive only been to Atlanta a few times...only long enough to see some of downtown (traveling through...but I always make sure to roam around a bit) and I just love the energy there. I think the scenery is beautiful, the weather is mild, and the people seem nice. But I dont know much about it and I really would like to know a little more. Ga seems like a pretty laid back place. I guess I need a better look around. Any insight would be great:D

Yeah I love ATL very much. I like the N.GA mountains as well but ATL is where my heart is. The rest of GA can bite me really :) but yeah I live about 45 mins. south of ATL but I pretty much grew up there and I'm always rolling up there to visit friends and family and am about 10 seconds from moving back up there.

So anyway: I say yes! Move to ATL!

Alot of bands say that ATL is they're favorite stop on the tour cuz the crowd in ATL has the most energy. The Dead said ATL is they're new favorite stop. What up bitches?:)

I was born and raised in GA. Atlanta is pretty cool, but it's still the east coast. There are some pretty laid back places to live, like little five points, east Atlanta and decatur. However, once you get outside of atlanta city limits it's scary!! Very very conservative. If your really looking for a laid back place I would go to California. If you do end up moving here though, go to the places I listed and you will find many cool, fun and laid back people! Sprout is right about the mountains! If you like camping, climbing. skinny dipping, and hiking you should check out the mountains in Ga. The mountains around here are good for a quick escape form the city!

I love ATL. been going there since i was itty bitty! i might be a weirdo but my favorite part of doing the ATL tourist thing is driving around and lookin at SEVER'S work with the spray can LOL... however I have never stayed there for longer than 4 or 5 days so i woldnt know what it is like to live there...............................

Savannah is a good place---enough diversity that no one gives a shit what you are up to...I like it that way. LoL

You can make it in 30 minutes at 4AM on a Saturday with my dad driving. :p But when I think 30 minutes, I think of the midtown area down 400. Plus I'm in south Forsyth.. almost Alpharetta, so it takes less time.

It's changed a lot from my point of view, in good and bad ways. Long ago was the time where the KKK burned a cross on my lawn for being Jewish. Try explaining that one to a 5 year old. And some of my best friends are Asian, black, and Arabic. I remember when the one of the first black families moved here and no one would talk to her except for me and a few others. That was as late as 1996. It's kind of funny now because the best Chinese food in the area is in Dawsonville. Who would have thought?

But as a tradeoff, all the trees are gone and there are empty strip malls littering the entire place. When I moved here, there was nothing. I think there was maybe 2 supermarkets in the entire county. Now there is at least 30... maybe even closer to 40. Gross.

I live in Macon, in central GA. Its about an hour and half south of metro atlanta, just a couple hours to savannah or athens, and not too far from milledgeville. Small antebellum sections, growing downtown, and home of Capricorn records, the Allman Brothers, and Little Richard. Really nice town, good herbs if you know where to find em.

i was born and raised in marietta, and currently live less than ten minutes from the heart of marietta.

i live in macon 80 miles south of atlanta. Been here all 24 yrs of my life.macon in itself isnt the best place, but there are nicer placed in the area. Im planning on moving to savannah with my job in a few yrs. North ga is a real nice place too.

Umm as far as Marietta and the North Side of Atlanta goes... I couldn't imagine a better place to live (within the state). I'm from Woodstock, the next stop just north of Marietta and I would suggest Canton as the place to settle down. Unless you absolutely have to work in the city proper and then Marietta is a good choice. Not trying to sell you on moving but I really love it here and being far enough removed from the city we have fewer problems than the city proper and aren't south GA (thank god). Drop me a line if you have any more questions... I have lived here my whole life.

Come to St. Simons Island. In my opinion it's by far the most laid back place in Georgia. It's a beautiful island with nice beaches, rivers, marshes, and a really rich history. I have lived here my entire life. I've been here a little too long but it's a nice place to live.

If I had to move to the ATL area I'd move to Blue Ridge though. It's like 2 hours north of the city but I love it there. St. Simons and Blue Ridge are the only two places I'd live in GA. I wouldn't live in Savannah. Really high crime rate. It's a nice place to visit but with the crime rate and everything that goes on there I'd be a little scared to live there. My uncle lives in Garden City (just outside of Savannah) and he has an Akita guard dog because so many of his neighbor's houses have been broken into.

Panic, my job bought out some places down in glynn county. great area i was there 4th of july.

The 4th on SSI is crazy. I didn't even attempt to go down to the pier this year. That's one holiday I'd rather get off the island. The last time I tried to go to the beach on the 4th it was like a giant mass of tourists. Not fun!

Yea it was crowded. We usually head down once or twice a yr. We stay ok jeckyll to get away and fish sometimes.

They make these brownies with cream cheese frosting that are amazing. I'm going there for breakfast tomorrow actually. They have really good bran muffins for breakfast.

The Army more or less sent me to live here at Fort Stewart/Hinesville...needless to say the general metaphysical environment here is extremely negative from my perspective...but that really isn't a good perspective for others here.

I'm from Rome, Ga but I live in Conyers Georgia. If I were you I would definatly try to get into the little five points/candler park area. Or the mountains. Did you move here yet?

I just moved to Savannah about a month ago. It's so beautiful here, plus we live about a mile from Bonaventure cemetery. We might have to move to Hilton Head in about a year, though, and that just makes me sad. Everyone says this city is really ghetto, but I love it.

I live in Marietta and trust me - if you are looking for a laid back place do NOT move here... I'm going to move soon too... Look more at N Georgia or Athens, Georgia or even Savannah... Good Luck

I have been moving around all my life. If you want to live in a red state here you go Georgia is red as hell. I do have alot of friends and family here and have moved away many times. I would never encourage anyone to move to this back asswards state for any reason. Move west and run. Georgia has some of the worst allergies for our pollen is so bad. Traffic is the worst in the nation. And they believe in cutting down every tree that can be cut. Then they throw a wallmart there( we have more of those than any other state). We also have some of the worst pot laws and gostopo police to enforce them.

On the bright side I cant find better friends (hippie) anywhere. We have a thriving music scene and great (hack hack hack). But that is not enough to keep me here. I live here cause my mom is sick. I was living so happily in Oregon. Goergia it is a nice place to visit but not to live. All in all this place sux!!!!!!!!!

I love Georgia. I love the mountains, Savannah is so much fun, and sure there are some super conservative hicks around......but shitheads live all over the world. ;) Oh but I HATE Atlanta.

You should check out Athens. It is just a bit over an hour from ATL but a VERY cool college town!

tell me about your area. Im thinking of making Ga my home...Ive only been to Atlanta a few times...only long enough to see some of downtown (traveling through...but I always make sure to roam around a bit) and I just love the energy there. I think the scenery is beautiful, the weather is mild, and the people seem nice. But I dont know much about it and I really would like to know a little more. Ga seems like a pretty laid back place. I guess I need a better look around. Any insight would be great:DBe prepared for religion, ignorance, and the buddy system.

Atlanta, Macon, Savannah, etc., i.e. the larger towns are pretty cool. The small towns suck badly - rednecks all over the place....

i personally feel the exact opposite,. the cities in georgia suck ass,there filled with a buncha money focused babylon entrenched transplanted wannabes from all over the country.

the smaller towns are for the most part filled with kind accepting easy going folks..

i was born in a small town here and other than 7 years of traveling i have spent my entire life in georgia..

dont believe the folks that are paranoid of country folks..although im sure some of the small towns in georgia are backwards and redneck,i would have to say most the small towns in georgia are not that way.the people who say otherwise obviously have never spent enough time in the small towns to quit stereotyping the good folks that live in them...

and you on the other hand just stereotyped everyone that lives in the big cities....

true enough,, i should clarify,my mom and both my sisters live in and around atlanta.although my mother was the oldest of 13 kids and raised in haralson county on a 600 acre farm,she is like the rest in and around atlanta,consumed by the city.im sorry,i feel the city does something to the human psyche that is just not beneficial.

the lifestyle the city forces you to live repulses me and quite frankly i feel it rapes a person of a lot of there kindness and compassion. i havent met anyone down there in 20 years that is near as kind and down to earth as 99% of the folks who live in the rural areas..that includes what its done to my own family. maybe i just dont spend enough time down there?which gos back to what i said about the stereotypes of us country folk,maybe its the same from others eyes for that reason as well,,i dont know.

so if i made a generalization i apologize,i was basing my statement on what i see in my day to day life just as those who say opposite do..

i guess its all in what eyes your looking through and from which direction..

as for me, ill keep holdin up in my "redneck" town where folks dont look at us weird, or tighten there hold on there purse when they see us coming.(we both have dreads,,an well lets just say some would say we are usually unkempt ;) )

Hey all. I've lived in Georgia pretty much my whole life. I grew up in Valdosta(south Ga.), moved to the Atl. area for my teens and 20's(mostly partied and had a great time), then I settled in middle Ga. I'm in Byron now. Me and Kudzu try to dominate each other in summer, haha!

Well in case you do decide to move here welcome to Atlanta in advance Elle, I'm in my 20s and I've lived here since I was 2 - so I'll tell you what I've figured out over the years about ATL Now I'm a guy so I don't know if ladies would have a different perspective but here's how I see it. Marietta is very square, same for the VA Highlands area and Norcross - but they're all pretty hip compared to South GA LOL (and Sprout I know you'll agree with me on that one!). Little 5 Points is like a mini Greenwich Village or Haight Ashbury during their prime - but a little more laid back. There's a cool restaraunt/bar/club over there called The Five Spot which always has live music with no cover, and the food's pretty good - the drinks are great. Lots of cool people hang out there. The best way to connect with people on the same wavelength (besides this website) is concerts - the hip community in ATL seems to be small until you go to a concert and realize there's probably more here than anywhere else in the South, you just have to go to the right places to find em I remember a few years back going to a Phil & Friends concert and being amazed cuz there was an ocean of hip people - it was a bigger crowd than I've seen at some mainstream rap or rock concerts. Everybody was gettin their 420 on and makin new friends and just soaking up the vibes it was pretty cool. Of course in this city Dead concerts or any jam band concerts are safe bets to meet cool people, same for reggae concerts. But basically if you're a fun person you'll meet cool people wherever you go, even if it's a square area - cuz there's always a few rebels even in the squarest spots So don't be bummed out if you're moving to Marietta cuz you should'nt have a problem connecting with cool people even out there. Athens and Savannah are pretty hip places by the way - they're a long way from ATL but worth the trip. I live on the north side of ATL which is pretty boring (and let me hop on my soapbox for a minute about C Marley's post, don't believe him NO EVERYONE WHO LIVES ON THE NORTH SIDE ISN'T RICH LOL I'm just another one of this city's 10,000 musicians I'm not a rich guy LOL but that was funny to read.) Anyway hope I answered some of your questions Elle, peace love and good vibes to everybody else who posted and Sprout I haven't talked to you in a while you probably don't recognize my new username - this is Raven the guitar player I remember when you were trying to help get the Atlanta hippie gathering started a while back (years and years ago). Anyway if you or Pixitrixi or Peacegypsy or anybody else on here wants to chill sometime or just wants some recommendations on cool places to hang out in ATL, hit me up. I'm also working on setting up a monthly jam session for all the hip musicians in town so spread the word.
