Okie from Muskogee
(Merle Haggard)

We don’t smoke marijuana in Muskogee;
We don’t take our trips on LSD
We don’t burn our draft cards down on Main Street;
We like livin’ right, and bein’ free.

I’m proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin’s still the biggest thrill of all

We don’t make a party out of lovin’;
We like holdin’ hands and pitchin’ woo;
We don’t let our hair grow long and shaggy,
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.

And I’m proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse
And white lightnin’s still the biggest thrill of all.

Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear;
Beads and Roman sandals won’t be seen.
Football’s still the roughest thing on campus,
And the kids here still respect the college dean.
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,

In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.

Hippie from Olema
(The Youngbloods)

Well I’m proud to be a hippie from Olema
Where we’re friendly to the squares and all the straights
We still take in strangers if they’re ragged
We can’t think of anyone to hate

We don’t watch commercials in Olema
We don’t buy the plastic crap they sell
We still wear our hair long like folks used to
And we bathe often, therefore we don’t smell

Well I’m proud to be a hippie from Olema
Where we’re friendly to the squares and all the straights
We still take in strangers if they’re ragged
We can’t think of anyone to hate

We don’t throw our beer cans on the highway
We don’t slide a man because he’s black
We don’t spill our oil out in the ocean
’Cause we love birds and fish too much for that

And I’m proud to be a hippie from Olema
Where we’re friendly to the squares and all the straights
We still take in strangers if they’re Haggard

In Olema, California, planet earth

David Peel is a bit radical, but Olema resonates, a lot of them are corporate now tho.. Strange how the tide changes things..

Hey Newo,

I've been looking for that song by the Youngbloods for awhile!
Couldn't remember how it wqent or who did it. Thanks!

P.S. Didn't I just see something in the news about the Youngbloods? Did the bass player die in the New Orleans storm or something?

Also do you know of the song that goes....

Well, I'm a long haired hippie,
I wear a long string of beads,
Chorus:
He's a long haired hippie he wears a long string of beads...
Well, I'm a long haired hippie,
I wear a long string of beads,
Chorus:
He's a long haired hippie he wears a long string of beads...
When I go walking down the street,
The people say,
Whoee look at that hair!

And that's all I remember. Nobody else in the world seems to ever have heard of it.
Strange.

Hey Meagain, no I haven't heard any news about any of the Youngbloods, and I don't recognize that song. Could it be it was recorded by a local band?

Yeah Gate!!!

That's the tune!
Somebody changed the words! I forgot about that Texan song! I have no idea what band did the hippie version, I remember it going round in the early seventies on the radio, probably early FM.
I've tried doing Google searches and can't find a thing. Bugs me.

It was Barry Cowsill...
It was a little shocking to hear of the death (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/05/AR2006010501578.html) of Barry Cowsill, months after he went missing in New Orleans in Hurricane Katrina. His skeletal remains were found on a warf Dec. 28 and his identity was finally determined through dental records. The tragic end of Cowsill, 51, was just another tragedy in a family band known by most to have brought sunny sounds to the radio in the 60s with songs like "The Rain, The Park and Other Things," "Indian Lake" and "Hair."
